I understand the technical distinctions, but what bothers me most is whether the slower PCIe connection between the CPU and chipset actually affects real performance. Will Cinebench scores drop? Will video rendering take longer? Could a 5900X on a B550 board with a 3080 be noticeably or even significantly slower than the same components in a X570 motherboard for rendering, video editing, and gaming? That’s all I’m testing with my current setup.

Outside edge scenarios? No. Typically, the standard 20 lanes on the CPU—four reserved for the chipset—will be the only ones you’ll use in a setup with one GPU and NVMe storage. The chipset has minimal impact on performance, and most differences between motherboards can be offset by proper overclocking or effective cooling (thanks to AMD’s precision boost turbo). As long as the VRM is well-designed, your CPU will run at its best.

I envisioned it this way. There’s no point in needing countless PCIe devices or huge amounts of fast storage, right? My goal is for the upcoming build to be mATX, and I’d like to see fewer X570 mATX options available.

Unless you intend to use multiple graphics cards, MaxiCards isn't particularly impressive. I built one using iX or standard ATX now.

It's not really common to use more than one GPU these days, especially with SLI being outdated. I found the mATX build for my daughter to be excellent. There was space for a 280 AIO at the top and room for a 2.5 slot GPU. If she needed something bigger, I could easily move the AIO to the front. The motherboard looked good, and the process was fairly smooth. What specifically didn't you like about mATX?

It's a strange middle ground that doesn't really save much space versus a compact ATX. If you need something tiny, go for ITX. You don't need a 280mm rad AIO—it's more of a luxury if the case can fit it. For a lot of space, ATX is the way to go. That's why I'm not too keen on MATX.
