Compare Asus Rog Maximus Z690 Apex and Extreme models to see their differences.
I'm weighing my options between these two boards. I need to finish assembling quickly, and my local shop only carries the Extreme model, which is pricier but not a big deal. Are there any differences between the Extreme and Apex? You mentioned the Apex excels in overclocking and the Extreme also offers strong features—do they share the same VRM setup? I’ve heard some say the Extreme isn’t ideal for RAM overclocking and might even underperform compared to the Hero. That worries me a lot. Is this really accurate? My build will use DDR5 G.Skill Trident Z (16GB, dual 6000MHz, 36-36-36-70 timings) with XMP settings enabled via Gear 2, which is the default for that RAM. I understand it’s labeled as stock XMP, but technically it’s treated as overclocked like a CPU running boost. Also, how do the VRM cooling systems compare? Are they similar? And regarding build durability—does the Extreme include a backplate and does the Apex offer better stability during installation?
