I've been evaluating potential upgrades for my current DDR3 system. It still has 16GB RAM and an i5 with four cores. I'm planning to build a future gaming PC. I own an MSI board that's been reliable for years, but I'm curious about ASUS options. Although the specifications of both boards are similar, the ASUS model is marginally cheaper. Should I choose the MSI because of familiarity, or is there something unique about the ASUS board? I plan to purchase components individually and want a solid GPU first, starting with a decent 6-core CPU. Any insights on known issues with these boards would be helpful.

From the image it's tricky to judge, but I believe the MSI setup leaves more room between the main PCI-E and the smaller PCI-E, which means a wireless card would have more available space.

I don't have a specific plan for a CPU. Could you clarify what you mean by "CPU" and the context you're referring to?

It's around 12th or 13th generation, so an i5 with six cores works fine. You don’t need to spend too much; six cores still handle games well and many titles don’t require full utilization. If you really need it, consider the i5 12400F and a budget GPU for your screen until you upgrade later. Updated November 9, 2023 by WackySpace

I understand you prefer a wireless USB adapter. It's good you're mindful of size and airflow.

In simple terms, I believe the MSI might fit three slots, while the Asus could have two or two and a half. It's difficult to confirm without checking measurements, but this matters for M-ATX setups because the PCI-E slot is often not compatible with many boards when you have a big graphics card. You should also consider the B660 and B760 models, like the B660M-K, which are more affordable now and offer more USB 3 ports plus two M.2 slots.

I can't afford anything over 2000 ZAR for a motherboard.

I was just informing you about Black Friday soon. In my country, H610 motherboards usually don't offer much discount compared to the lower-end B660/B760 models, particularly during promotions. For instance, some stores have a price gap of just $10 to $15 between the B660M-K and H610M-K.

I'll keep an eye out for deals, though the main change I notice is the b660 supports two M.2 slots.
