I was surprised by how costly these boards have become! After discovering my 12900k gift, I’m considering upgrading to Z690 boards right away. I need to start shopping for components now, and the motherboard has been top of mind. I focused my search on two models: ROG Maximus Z690 Hero and MSI MEG Z690 ACE. Both look nearly identical in features and price. My experience with both brands’ support has been mixed, but I think Asus might have better long-term hardware backing. I’m reaching out to the community to get advice on component quality or other factors to weigh when choosing between them. Just a quick reminder about not wanting ASRock or Gigabyte since they don’t have a third USBC on the back.
Lol. The DDR5 boards are meant to cost less than DDR4 ones because they shifted a function from the motherboard to the memory itself, making the memory extremely expensive. The 12th generation models are brand new. Very few people will own them, and even fewer will have more than one for comparison. A company might create a good board and then follow up with mediocre products. MSI had a solid reputation for their B450 but was average for the B550, for instance. Usually, only single boards are released. The MSI B450s stand out as an exception. I’d say brand name usually doesn’t matter much unless it comes with a good model. There could be some brands with no decent options, so it’s more useful to watch reviews.
