Hey there! I’m thinking about swapping in a Ryzen 5 3600x or R7 3700x, depending on what Black Friday prices look like. For now, I’m planning to get a new motherboard. I’m wondering if it’s better to go with the X570 model or stick with the X470. My choices are the Gigabyte X570 Gaming X at $230, the MSI X470 GAMING PRO at $192, or the ASUS PRIME X470-PRO at $202. I already have a 16GB Trident Z Royal RAM and a Cooler Master ML360R cooler, plus 2TB NVMe storage and several SATA SSDs. My power supply is 650W, but I’m planning to upgrade it to a 1000W unit once the new CPU arrives. I’ll also be moving from the Zotac 1070 AMP Extreme to a 2060 or 2070 SUPER GPU. I’m not sure which board in that price range will fit best, especially since I want to overclock the CPU as well. Right now my B350 board isn’t handling overclocking well, and my RAM only reaches around 2800MHz. I’m also unsure if my current board is faulty.
X570 adds extra expense without new features compared to X470. The main advantage is PCIe 4.0, which isn't needed by most systems. Choose X470 and invest the savings in a stronger processor.
x570 gaming isn’t the best option. The VRM heatsink and MOSFETs aren’t very strong. Pairing it with a 3600x or 3700x works, but overclocking helps a bit. Check the link for more details. It’s not ideal overall. Three green checkmarks are recommended in the middle.
Out of budget, the Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite (with or without WiFi) offers solid VRM and heatsink performance. Another solid choice is the Asus TUF Gaming x570 Plus. The x470 boards have mixed reviews—especially the x470’s VRM, which isn’t great. MSI X470 GAMING PRO is pricier but still decent. Avoid BIOS flashback unless you’re comfortable updating old chips.
ASUS PRIME X470-PRO could be a better pick, worth about $10 more. In short, it doesn’t seem worthwhile to buy these x470 models. Consider exploring B450 boards from MSI instead—they have excellent options like the b450 gaming plus and b450m gaming plus.
Save on the 3600 by upgrading it instead. The 3600 is simple to boost its speed and perform better without needing the 3600x.
This outdated belief... The 3600X can be pushed to match the 3700X's speed. Many thought I was foolish for choosing a 3800X, but AGESA has since improved my 3800X performance—now it reaches up to 4.4GHz across all cores and hits 4.6Ghz on one core. Find me a 3700X that can rival that?
Current board condition is quite poor, but even the Asus X570-P seems overpriced. Opting for a solid B450 or X470 would be better. Gaming Pro uses the same build as MSI B450 ATX boards, with heatsinks comparable to the A-pro. The Prime X470 Pro has weak VRM thermal performance because of a poor heatsink, despite decent power stages underneath. I wouldn't pay around $20 extra for it, especially when its frequency edge isn't justified. It's more about whether saving money means sacrificing up to 5% in speed potential.
It's all about getting the best silicone results. I'm not worried about pushing it too much. Just need my RAM to perform at its rated speed and my CPU to hit its maximum boost, around 0.2 to 0.5.
