I've been planning a build for this generation and initially considered the 7800X3D before it was announced. Right now, I'm running an Intel 6800k/GTX1080 that's nearing seven years of use. AMD's early performance figures for the 7800X3D were underwhelming, especially when factoring in the expected cost. Since then, I've been evaluating the 7700(X)/7600(X). As a gamer, my main concern is whether the extra cores in the 7700(X) add value. At this stage, I'm weighing: wait for third-party tests on the 7800X3D and stick with it; opt for the 7700(X)/7600(X) for reliable performance at better value; pass on this generation since overall value isn't strong; or skip it entirely given current market conditions. The GPU landscape is also uncertain—upgrading to a new CPU would likely require a GPU upgrade, but I can't justify the cost of anything right now. I'm aiming for something with Nvidia XX80 performance priced between $600 and $800, though that seems challenging these days. I hope AMD has released more details about the 7800XT, but the price and performance of the 7900XT make me doubt its value. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If X3D benefits as much as on Zen 3 it would be a big advantage tho, imo wait for 3rd party reviews. You have time since they are supposed to launch next month

This setup seems to offer a good balance: AM4 paired with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D provides a solid performance without breaking the bank. They rely on older components, which are still widely available, though the upgrade options are somewhat restricted.

When playing at 4K resolution, the X3D won’t offer much advantage. Your graphics card remains a limiting factor, even the 4090 model. The X3D version is only worth considering if you can purchase it at a comparable price to the non-X alternative, and you have the funds for a custom heatsink setup. In my view, a 6-core processor is ideal for gaming. The 12 and 16-core options come into play when you’re handling intensive tasks. An 8-core chip fits a tighter budget, but only if your workload stays within that range. It’s mainly for short-term use or as a temporary solution until you upgrade more cores later—typically for future upgrades. Its user base is quite narrow. For current pricing in your area, the Intel 13th gen 6P+6E offers better value compared to the 7700X 8-core model at the same cost, especially if cooling isn’t a priority and you’re okay with outdated hardware. Based on the 5800X benchmark, the 7800 X3D 8-core delivers slower speeds than expected, though it still provides solid gaming performance at 1080p. At higher resolutions like 1440p, the gains are less dramatic but still present. The 12 and 16-core models seem to keep their clock speeds, but only one will include extra cache—possibly affecting performance for certain tasks. We’ll have to monitor how they perform in real-world use. For the X3D variant, anticipate strong demand, limited availability, and a higher price tag. I've been using 1440p at 144hz for several years and might upgrade to a higher refresh rate or even 4K soon. Being near a Micro Center, the 7600X is available for $200 (open box) with 16GB DDR5 5600, while the 7700X costs $343 with 32GB DDR5 6000. I've considered using a dead platform (AM4 or Intel), but it would be great to have flexibility for future upgrades if needed. My needs are close to the limit of what X3D can handle. Compared to the 5800X3D, I'm leaning toward the 7600X—especially if Micro Center offered DDR5 6000 instead of 5600. I plan to match it with an Arctic Freezer II 360/420 AIO, so cooling shouldn't be a concern. The main decision is whether to wait for X3D benchmarks or take advantage of current Micro Center promotions.
