Common issues with Ubiquity AP, Router & Controller installation
Hello, I've been managing my network using UBNT equipment for some time now. I initially connected four APs directly to my ISP router, and it performed excellently. Since then, I've kept them running without modifying the controller software. Later, I installed a UBNT EdgerouterX, which also worked well. Recently, I added another AP to fill a coverage gap and get it up and running, but I had to reinstall the software again. After integrating the APs into the controller, all network functions stopped functioning properly.
The issue: Certain devices remain connected (two tablets), others stayed online briefly before disconnecting, while others lost connection instantly (like a desktop). When trying to join any AP, Windows reports an inability and Android simply won't respond. No error messages appear. Cable connections are unaffected.
What I've tried so far:
- Update everything – no change
- Searched online for adjustments – nothing useful
- Restarted hardware and software – still no improvement
- Reinstalled software and performed a hard reset – same result
I'm not very experienced with networking, but I know the fundamentals. This seems beyond my current skill level. I'm uncertain what details to share to assist you.
Hardware: 5 x UBNT AC Lite (Firmware 4.0.42.10433), 1 x UBNT Edge router X (Firmware 1.10.08), 1 x Generic ISP modem, Controller software on a Cable PC linked to the Edge router (Version 5.10.25, Build: atag_5.10.25_11682)
Setup: Internet → Modem → EdgeRouter → Switch → APs & House; only the EdgeRouter sends IPs to 255.255.1.X. The modem is only on 255.255.255.0. I think the EdgeRouter should act as a DHCP server, but I might be misunderstanding. If that's the case, it won't work, but how can I fix it?
I've attached the current controller settings file. Sorry if this is unclear. I'm really stuck and would appreciate any advice. Thank you to anyone who can help.
EDIT: Recently, a phone connected randomly without changes. I still kept it active. Perhaps the problem lies with the DHCP configuration? Ignoring that. It gets blocked immediately when I try to interact. No luck so far – reinstalling software and resetting hardware hasn't helped. I'm reaching out to UBNT support for an update.
Consider using a router-modem combo unit. Check if it supports DHCP, nat functionality, and network access without automatic IP assignment. Ensure it connects properly to the network and passes through the firewall and DNS as expected. The controller software appears to handle APS management without handling any traffic through it.
It functions as a router but you can't disable the DHCP server. The settings are quite restricted, yet it hasn't caused any issues so far. It appears to not receive an IP address clearly, just seems to reflect or bounce without giving any information. It occasionally stops and then restarts because of auto-connect features. Runs on a basic Windows machine with an i5 processor and 16GB RAM. It's been used as a low-end NAS and occasionally as a resource-heavy task node (like lighting builds in UE4). Otherwise, it remains idle until the controller software starts.
I chose the EdgeRouter thanks to its QOS capabilities. The ISP router lacks any QOS options, which made the situation quite urgent given my internet speed. The combination of mode & ER never led to issues before, so I suspect this is the reason. It might be related to the controller itself. I’m not sure how to set it up properly—tried on my phone with static IP and fixed gateway settings. Now it keeps jumping in and out. Updated July 16, 2019 by DomDom3333 More info
I reached out to Support who recommended three adjustments: disable High-Performance Devices, Advanced features, and Auto-Optimize Network. Settings > Wireless Networks > SSID > Advanced Options > High Performance Devices Settings > Site > Auto-Optimize Network Settings > Site > Advanced features. I had all except Auto-Optimize turned off, then switched it off and everything functioned normally. Unclear what the change did, but it resolved the issue. Thanks for the help!
