I've experienced many MMOs, and I see they all have a similar lifespan. In Stage 1, New Release: A fresh online title launches, generating buzz and increasing its reach. Stage 2, Logical Updates: The game receives several revisions focusing on graphics and gameplay, generally improving the experience with more content or updates. More players start engaging. Stage 3, Peak Popularity: The game becomes highly popular and well-received, with a large, enthusiastic community. Stage 4, Dropping Profits: Developers notice a slight drop in revenue but instead of enhancing the game, they push for additional purchases. Stage 5, Quit Threads: The audience expresses frustration over increased spending, leading to many 'I Quit' discussions. Stage 6, Panic: The main product loses its appeal, falling quickly out of favor and fading into obscurity. Stage 7, Stagnation: Many games remain active for a short time before being discontinued, often due to lack of funding or excitement, staying mostly unchanged for years. Stage 8, Closure or Remake: Dark Orbit opts for a remake, while EA discontinues Need for Speed World and BattleField Heroes. The remake rarely matches the original's success but may experience its own cycle.

If Valve can assist, then this really clarifies TF2.

Typically, most versions launch as free-to-play at the end.

It varies by game. Sometimes releases might not go through, but generally it's about delivering content quickly and managing expenses (like partner ads).

I'm still enjoying GTA Online nonstop since its launch on 360. The latest patch really gets me excited—I'm up late at 12:30 AM thinking about jumping onto Xbone. Oh, and I wonder if Star Citizen will follow suit, hehe.
