Hello. I own an R5 3500X and a GTX 1660 Super with 2x4GB CL14 RAM, a dual-channel motherboard (B450M). I was hoping it would improve stability or boost FPS in modern games. I saw some YouTube videos suggesting 12GB RAM gives similar results to 16GB, so I considered upgrading to 12GB while staying on a budget. My main concern is whether mixing different RAM frequencies works—currently I have DDR4 2400 CL14 4GB and plan to add a higher-speed model like DDR4 2400 CL17 (e.g., 8GB) with overclocking both to 2666 in XMP. Would it run smoothly without issues like BSOD or black screens during startup? I’m okay with some FPS drops but want to eliminate those microstutters. Thanks ahead!

I believe it consistently chooses the simplest option, similar to how clock speeds operate, just my perspective

16GB isn't too much if you're using Dual Channel. Choose 8GB plus 4GB at the same clock speed. Just remember to set them manually—XMP won't apply.

I thought it was too much since I see many game benchmark videos showing RAM usage under 10GB (except for Battlefield 5, which uses about 10-11GB). I don’t expect to play while running other apps or streaming. Maybe I misunderstood those numbers. Thanks for the info!
