Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 3580 with an AMD Radeon 520 (2GB) GPU. I’m wondering if it’s possible to remove this GPU and use the PCIe slot for a Thunderbolt port to achieve Thunderbolt connectivity. Thanks ahead!

The laptop doesn<|pad|>'s say it lacks a Thunderbolt connection, which requires an Intel-made chip on the board. The graphics card is permanently attached to the circuit board and can't be taken off.

Just for fun, removing the GPU would change things up. To capture video you’d need Thunderbolt ports for fast data transfer and reliable connections. Yes, you can remove the GPU without using a GPU. Since it isn’t soldered, you should be able to detach it easily.

after several checks and guidance from Quora, I understand the GPU is permanently attached. For the second choice—optical drive—I’m unsure whether it uses SATA or PCIe. If it’s SATA, are there any solutions to convert it to a PCIe connection?

You can't simply insert a thunderbolt chip into a laptop. It needs to be linked to PCI-E lanes, connected to the processor, and supported by BIOS code. It can't just be placed like a standard SSD or M.2 drive. SATA is only for storage, and converting it to PCI-E isn't feasible. The idea of using a miniPCI slot is limited—it only provides one PCI-E lane. With such a setup, you'd need a custom cable to move the lane outside the system, and even then, powering a video card would be challenging. Thunderbolt works because it uses multiple lanes and specific CPU connections, which isn't possible with a single lane configuration.
