I grabbed a 10 cent Microsoft sidewinder and saw it works well with Steam Big Picture after setup, but I’m looking for ways to play games using just the A/BXY stick and one pad. Any suggestions?

You'd need to install a specialized key remapper, as this version is outdated and no longer officially available.

It was immediately identified by Steam, and I could utilize it with a remap from the game I had recently downloaded. Whether there are suitable games to play from it is unclear to me.

He owns a SideWinder 2, and certain titles work perfectly with it, while others don’t.

It seems you're referring to something that's a "plug and play." Would you like me to rephrase or explain it further?

All my NES ports function perfectly on this machine... I just played Mario Bros 3 for about two hours. The NES games feel way more challenging now than they did back then.
