I recently installed an SSD with 512GB, and I have an HDD containing my OS and files (1TB). I’m looking to move the OS from the HDD to the SSD without using paid software. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Get Macrium Reflect. Duplicate the HDD onto the SSD, ensuring the total data fits on the SSD. Confirm whether your HDD is a 1TB model or if your files collectively reach 1TB. If the SSD brand is well-known such as Samsung or Crucial, they offer free software for it too. Reminder: You can't simply transfer the operating system alone, so I recommend moving everything off the HDD and disposing of it.

Make sure the contents on the 1GB HDD stay under 5GB to avoid problems, which is obvious enough.

You can transfer your operating system to the SSD while keeping your personal files on the HDD. There are tools available that allow you to move the OS to the SSD without deleting data from the HDD. Just ensure you back up everything first, and follow the instructions carefully. If you're unsure, start with a small partition or use a recovery software.

Yes, you can reinstall Windows and choose the SSD from the installation options. When prompted, it will show your available drives and partitions. Choose the 500GB SSD. After that, enter BIOS settings and set the SSD as the new boot device, as both have Windows installed on them.

You can follow the steps in the Windows Backup & Recovery section. Since you're just starting out, look for clear instructions or a beginner-friendly guide that walks you through reinstalling Windows. Let me know if you need more specific help!

Oh and don't worry about needing a license or buying one. You can run Windows unactivated without issue. I do on multiple machines.

Absolutely, I understand—Linus does that too, though it's another matter altogether.
