I checked www.pcpartpicker.com to find out the upgrade costs for my system built in mid-2013. It showed that the Intel Core-i5 11000 Series 6C 2600Mhz was cheaper and had an iGPU, but ran about 1,000Mhz slower than the R5-3600 at 3600Mhz. I compared it to my current i5-4670 at 3400Mhz. With the newer i5 and its integrated graphics, I expect a significant performance boost over my older model.
Comparing MHz isn't accurate. Check user reviews about how those CPUs perform, since CPUs can handle varying workloads at the same frequency. Most contemporary CPUs don't consistently run at their base speed either.
Consider the full frequency range beyond just the base. The i5 11600 operates from 2.8 to 4.8 GHz, depending on what you mean. Additionally, newer CPU generations often deliver higher performance at identical clock speeds due to improved instruction processing efficiency.
I was considering that idea. I recall the Megahertz Wars in the mid-90s. AMD's K5 beat the Pentium back then...
The latest chips handle more operations per instruction than the previous ones. There are also many new special instructions that speed up certain tasks such as AVX2. It’s unlikely they’ll ever run at 2.6GHz; most will likely stay around 4GHz to 4.4GHz under typical conditions.
The 11600k features all-core turbo at 4.6GHz when running normally, though it may approach its power ceiling. The non-K variant typically runs around 4.2 to 4.4GHz.
Mainly what others have mentioned is that all the 11th generation i5s perform better than the 3600 and will see a significant improvement over the 4670.
