Searching for an alternative OS besides Windows Server that supports RDP-like sessions. Looking for solutions that work with basic thin clients or low-end PCs, allowing network access to a host for running simple applications. I recall seeing this in schools and doctor offices—it seems suitable for basic needs.

Companies likely relied on Citrix. For a free alternative, you could run XenServer hypervisor on powerful hardware and deploy Linux virtual machines, then connect them to the server via VNC using a VNC client on the thin client.

Typically, companies opt for solutions like Citrix XenApp or XenDesktop alongside Windows. Many prefer platforms that combine Citrix with other technologies.

I was considering Citrix XenDesktop. It’s definitely an enterprise option. My organization has numerous users, and I need to set up external access for some. Citrix fits the bill perfectly.
