I’m new to cleaning electronics, I usually just blow air over my PC, but I see it still leaves a lot of dust behind. (I often spot a very thin dust layer on my graphics card, etc.). Here’s a photo from inside a really dusty 2017 Shield. What cleaning products should I use for the board, fan, and case? A regular blower won’t remove all the stubborn dust.

A soft makeup brush. Beyond that, nothing is needed. No reason to get rid of every spec of dust.

I typically use isopropyl alcohol for the chemical in most cases, including the board itself. The plastic and paint should handle it without problems. If they do, switch to a milder cleaner like a multi-surface cleaner. For wiping, a microfiber cloth works well, and on the circuit board, an acid brush can help remove dust after applying alcohol. You can also use an acid brush to dislodge dust from fan blades, which will make compressed air more effective.

It depends on the level of cleanliness you desire. Are you aiming for a fully sanitized surface or simply avoiding dust buildup? Using IPA for a board seems unnecessary to me. For a basic clean, a makeup brush is sufficient.

I mentioned acid brushes since those are my cleaning tools; the long bristles help pull dust away easily and work better than makeup brushes. For simply taking off dry particles, a brush should suffice—anything stuck on, like grease from a thermal pad, needs isopropyl alcohol or another solvent. After applying IPA, brushing lets you scrub surfaces more effectively, increasing the amount that dissolves. If stronger scrubbing is needed, I’ll trim the bristles to stiffen them and rub them into the areas. Once dust is loosened, a can of compressed air works well for removal. For microfiber cloths, I just spray IPA directly onto the cloth and wipe surfaces; it’s more efficient than cotton swabs. Cotton swabs are tricky—they’re hard to maneuver and may push dirt around instead of removing it. A toothbrush isn’t ideal for cleaning fan blades because its bristles aren’t long enough to reach across the whole surface. In reality, cleaning a full graphics card demands various techniques; one method isn’t sufficient.

Brush tips can indeed be too abrasive for sensitive electronics like motherboards, circuit boards, or graphics cards. Softer bristles are usually preferred to avoid damaging components. Acid brushes often use horsehair, which is gentler compared to harsher alternatives.

Consider using microfiber cloths soaked in ISO instead of dip cloths. It makes a difference. I also check if they work with Kim wipes and Shop Towels.

I’d apply microfiber cloths only after wetting the shroud section with ISO, then switch to a dry cloth for actual dust removal. On the circuit board, I’d use Kim wipes which also contain ISO. Personally, I’ve only used paper towels; they can tear and leave residue if not handled carefully. Shop towels might face similar problems over time. Using compressed air afterward should clear any remaining particles. With Kim wipes, be mindful they’re thin and less absorbent—using multiple may be necessary to avoid tearing.
