It's accurate that 4K was being developed at the time. Game studios considered higher resolutions during production, and modern engines support this too. Unlike raster images, video games use 3D models and textures instead of pixels. These models remain unchanged in quality; only the textures might appear larger on bigger screens.
Remember the need for proper hardware to drive all those pixels, which wasn’t immediately clear to me. I attempted to run the original Thief 2 from 2000 with a 4K setting, but my NVidia 670 struggled to render eight million pixels at 60 frames per second, causing significant lag. I was taken aback, though I hadn’t anticipated it would function at all.
