Choose Zen2 now or wait for Zen3?
Oh in that case if you want to reach those frame rates you should wait for zen 3 and maybe sell the 1080ti they sell on ebay for 400USD and get the rtx 3070 for 500$ (hoping the price stay like this) and you'll get better performance than 4900x vs 4700x
It doesn't always need low resolution for a game to hit a frame rate limit because of CPU issues, though that's generally true in most cases. With a 165Hz display, differences between Zen 2 and Intel can be noticeable, especially since upcoming titles are expected to demand more CPU power. This could lead to performance variations, like in the case of Microsoft Flight Simulator.
MFS sparked my desire to upgrade. You can picture how my 3930K struggled, right? Haha! Also, 165hz isn't a must—most games already work fine with my current setup. However, I do see that my CPU from 2020 titles is showing signs of wear; it's definitely starting to lag, especially when trying to maintain 60 FPS at higher settings like 1440P.
The release date for Zen 3 isn't set yet, making it hard to advise waiting. Unless the advantages I mentioned matter to you or the upgrade is crucial for your work, it would still be a significant improvement from version 3930K. I believe you wouldn’t regret it either way.
Act fast, the 1080TI is losing value quickly. Grab the 3070 if you need it for a workstation, then hold off for the Zen3 and secure a 4800/4900 model.
