Hello, I understand you're looking to upgrade your HP Z230 Workstation. It's been around for about 5 to 6 years now. You currently have 8GB (two 4GB modules) and want to increase it to 16GB. You're facing some challenges regarding the RAM setup—whether it's dual-channel, single-channel, or quad, what speed you need, whether buffered or unbuffered is best, and whether to buy a 2x8GB or 4x4GB kit or just stick with the existing 8GB. Your current RAM images are attached for reference. Let me know how I can assist further!

It's a dual channel setup you're looking for. You'll need either two or four sticks of unbuffered, unregistered DDS3 with a max of 1600MHz and a total capacity of up to 32GB. It can be either ECC or non-ECC. Opt for ECC memory since you can find it cheaply on eBay—just stick to what fits your budget. If you need the full 32GB, that's four 8GB sticks. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03919165

Thanks for your time. Are you sure you need PC3, PC3L, or they’re interchangeable? Since you’re already using PCL3, it might be the same model.

Power consumption is limited. With a desktop setup, it's not a big issue
