I’m considering switching from Vista to either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Since the costs are equal, it’s mainly about personal preference. I enjoy both operating systems and like the Metro interface in Windows 7 more than in Windows 8.1. Metro isn’t available in Windows 7, which makes me favor that version. Which one do you recommend?

Make sure Windows 8 is current—it works better than Windows 7 for you. I don’t understand why some folks dislike it.

I've been using Windows 7 for many years until the past year, but I recently switched to a Windows 8 laptop. I really dislike it. It just isn't right for me. Win7 seems much easier to use and lacks unnecessary features you probably don't need.

I prefer version 7, though I can disable the unnecessary "Metro" features they pushed in the first release of 8... It's really just an upgraded take when you do that. Plus, you'd only save around $10 by sticking with 7. So go ahead and try 8.1.

Opt for version 8.1 now, as it should let you skip the tiles completely without needing extra third-party tools—effectively improving your Windows 7 setup.

Upgraded to 8.1, installed the classic shell, and it essentially matched the new version but offered improved speed and capabilities. My gaming FPS increased by roughly ten points after moving from 7 to 8.1.
