I understand it might not be the most economical choice in a similar scenario—I received a 12100+H610 board for less than what the 6700K would have cost used. However, considering the OP's expectations, it could be a viable option they're more open to trying. I believe you're overvaluing the 3600; the Coffee Lake lineup is definitely competitive against Zen 2 during gaming. Check out these Starfield performance numbers—I’m sure they’ll surprise you.

You'd still hesitate to pay $100 for an 8700k because the 3600 model costs between $50-$60 and the 5600(x) ranges from $80-$100. Plus, it's more power-efficient and you'd have to add extra steps like modding the CPU and BIOS, which adds a bit of hassle.
