Your display's refresh rate is probably around 5600x, which aligns closely with the 5800x used in gaming. At higher resolutions, the workload shifts more to the GPU. The 6800xt should easily handle it, assuming you have a 144Hz monitor. We should still rely on actual performance tests before making any decisions.

The single-core advantage is modest, so it won’t be a major factor, though it still counts. The real question becomes how much extra you’re willing to spend for a slight boost. If you’re not just playing games but working on development, graphics, or video editing—anything that requires heavy processing—the extra cores can make a noticeable difference.

Looking for a more affordable CPU, but if you mainly play games then extra cores won't really boost performance.

At 1440p, there are no existing standards that rely solely on GPU power for the whole Ryzen 5000 lineup (except turn-based titles). Reducing it to 1080p could improve performance slightly for a few games compared to the 5600X. At 720p, you’ll begin noticing a clearer advantage over the 5800X.

For the 6900xt, six cores seem unnecessary unless you're targeting newer releases. Opting for a 6800xt with a higher core count would be preferable over a 6900xt with a weaker processor. Aim for at least twelve cores for a 6900xt; it's better suited for 12-16 cores with ample RAM, leaving no room for further upgrades. Adding four extra CPU cores (about a 50% increase) for roughly $100 is more beneficial than installing four additional GPU cores (+11%) for around $350. Both options—16 cores or 6900xt—carry high costs and offer limited performance gains in the current market.
