I'd prefer a higher thread count, like 2600. For newer games, 3500X seems to work better, but adding more threads will be more advantageous over time and it's also more affordable.

It really depends on whether you're focused on gaming. If it's all about games, go with 3500x. For other jobs that demand more processing, 2600 is the better option. The background app will require 2600 threads, but I believe a 3500x will work just fine in most cases.
