Hi, I mainly play competitive FPS games at low resolutions like 1080p to hit 120fps. My current setup uses an i58400 with a 1070 Ti and I'm experiencing only about 1% FPS. Upgrading the GPU isn't an option because prices are too high. I'm comparing a few options: an i5-10400f with MSI B560M-A for $260, an i5-12400 (price not listed), an Asus Prime B660M-A for $360, and a Biostar B660 MX-E for $320. Many people warn against these two boards. Would the extra $60–100 for the i5-12400 be worth it specifically for improving low FPS performance?

Regarding 11400(F), it tends to match the price of a 10400F. You might find the Asus + 12400F more appealing. Biostar isn't reliable, and Asrock hasn't performed well lately. When gaming, does your GPU consume over 95%? If yes, upgrading the CPU won't resolve the problem.

The price gap between these chips is minimal, around $20. It's unclear if the differences matter much. They lack XMP support for RAM and might pose risks to your CPU.

Their VRMs aren't enough for mid-range and high-end CPUs, leading to increased temperatures, throttling, and lower performance. The included features are often reduced, with poorer audio quality, fewer USB ports, less fan headers, and limited PCIe options—unless you specifically require those capabilities.

Thanks for clarifying, now it’s clearer. This throttling does occur in games too. On your i5 8400, you rarely exceed 65% CPU usage even with a budget 70$ motherboard.

The VRM parts on the motherboard have their own temperature, distinct from the CPU's, and exceeding a certain level can cause the VRM to slow down.

Starting from where you're located helps us find the most suitable offers. If the cost is reasonable, check out the i3-12100(F) – it outperforms the 10,400 in every core while offering significantly better single-core performance.

The 12400 and the ASUS board seem to be the top choices.
