For a recent setup with 1440p and 4K gaming, 3D work, rendering, and avoiding top-end CPUs, which processor works best—Intel or AMD? Which specific models are suitable? For the AMD 5600X or 5800 series?

Intel seems to be the stronger choice. The i5 12400F typically costs around $30 less than the 5600X with comparable motherboards in the mid-range. The i7 12700F matches the price of the 5800X (about $300) and uses similarly priced lower-mid boards, though it offers marginally better gaming performance and superior rendering speed. Generally, AMD CPUs are more practical for high-end builds or budget builds with a cheap A520 board and a 5600. For most users, go with Intel—the 12400(F) works well for gaming, while the 12700(F) shines if you need extra power for rendering or 3D work and can afford the additional $120.

Thanks, I prefer not to purchase premium items right now. I plan to assemble a high-end setup later this year. A mid-range option is what I’m aiming for.

I'm starting the build now because I have a brand new unopened 850 psu that won't suffice for a high-end setup with a 4090. I also have a 32GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM, which won't work if I upgrade to DDR5 platforms. Plus, it's only 3200 MHz instead of the higher speeds available.

You might also find better deals by selling them on the used market for a budget-friendly PC, which would save you money over time. New components are typically available within just a couple of weeks to a few months.

It's possible the 13th generation supports DDR4; though, if you already own components and wish to assemble now, the best value options are: i5-12400F ($170) or i7-12700F ($312) Ryzen 5 5600 ($180) or Ryzen 7 5700X ($287) and Ryzen 9 5900X ($397). Intel boards tend to cost more than AMD ones, so prices will be similar. Performance should be about average for most tasks. It's not worth spending on the 5600 when a cheaper 5600 is available. The 5700x is similar to the 5800x but less expensive.
