I am deciding between the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D for my new build. I plan to use it for 4k gaming, streaming services like Netflix and HBO, and general browsing. I’ll pair it with a 5090 GPU. Based on what I see, performance differences shouldn’t be huge because the GPU will likely be the limiting factor. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
I concur with Lutfij about the Intel Core ultra series excelling in productivity, and they perform well in games. However, the 9950X3D offers better speed and efficiency for gaming purposes. I've included the review of the 9950X3D since it covers both models. For those focused on gaming, the 9800X3D seems more suitable.
In my opinion, there are very limited reasons to choose Intel instead of AMD:
taking full advantage of platform benefits such as additional storage
if the system runs continuously and mostly sits idle
balancing price and performance based on your specific tasks (I opted for the 265K because it outperformed AMD significantly at a similar cost in multithreaded scenarios)
if you're mainly gaming and using standard office or desktop applications, the 9800X3D is clearly the top option. It's the most powerful gaming CPU available since it avoids the limitations of dual CCDs (though if AMD's software were flawless, the 9950X3D would always be faster due to improved binning).
