Hello, I'm facing a tricky situation. My 8-year-old Toshiba laptop needs a hard drive replacement in a few months. I plan to perform a clean install of Windows 7 using the recovery DVD from the original OEM version. I'm unsure which path to take:

1) Install Windows 7 and apply updates one by one, but worry about making sure I activate everything correctly.
2) Install Windows 7 with the Convenience Roll Package, which might include the problematic Get Windows 10 (GWX) or telemetry update.
3) Skip the package and do a clean install of Windows 10 without registering it. I’m okay with the watermark appearing.

According to system requirements, I should be able to run Windows 10, but I’m concerned about losing Office 2007. There are many conflicting information from Google about whether the upgrade to Windows 10 is still available or if it’s no longer supported. Could anyone clarify this and help me decide?

Best regards.

You should save your files, see if Windows 10 works, and try Windows 7 if it feels slow. Since you didn’t mention the laptop’s details, it’s hard to say exactly what to do.

When you set up Windows 10 on that laptop, using the proper edition ensures activation works. All original manufacturer licenses were set aside for the free Windows 10 upgrade. Even after the offer closed, since your free license was reserved, you can still upgrade without cost. For Office 2007, unless you change it, you must reinstall the same edition you have now under Windows 10 (or 7) and enter the original product key. If you’ve lost your key, tools like AIDA64 can help locate it. Make sure the Office 2007 installer matches your current license version.
