You're evaluating alternatives to Ubuntu, focusing on performance improvements and better Windows compatibility. Wine is an option, but you might also want to explore lightweight distributions or virtualization solutions that offer smoother operation and native app support. Let me know if you'd like more details on specific choices!
Also check out Zorin OS 16 lite, which highlights improved Windows application compatibility.
The design you mentioned is LinuxFX, a modern interface for Linux systems. It offers a sleek and user-friendly experience. Have you heard more about it?
If it’s light then consider Antix or MX-Linux (a collaboration between Antix and Mepis). With MX Linux you can set up your desktop in Live Mode and retain these preferences for installation, ensuring the desired look when you first boot. The drawback of xfce is that MX and Zorin Lite treat launchers as names within the panel, requiring you to adjust their positions manually rather than changing their labels directly. My favorite lightweight option is Devuan 4.0 with its Default DE (LXQt). I note that some KDE apps appear in the Menu since my primary desktop environment is Plasma (KDE).
Elementary OS is essentially Ubuntu with a different appearance. It operates quite similarly to Ubuntu. I haven't noticed any performance improvements compared to Ubuntu or the other way around. Solus is another standalone distribution. Its performance could be better, average, or worse. I'm unfamiliar with it.
