Hello. Your HP laptop has two RAM slots but they can’t use dual-channel. You’re using two 4GB modules, but you have an 8GB module nearby. Would installing one 8GB stick make it faster than the two 4GB sticks? The motherboard doesn’t support dual-channel mode.

If the motherboard doesn’t have dual channels, the performance gap might be minimal unless you examine your RAM speeds. Consider testing the dual 4GB and single 8GB modules to see which runs faster. The quicker one will likely offer better results.

In that scenario, the issue remains unchanged. The smaller capacity dimmer units would offer improved timing and reduced latency. To speed things up further, consider swapping the CD drive for a reliable SATA SSD. The EMC software currently in use is hindering performance.

I want to make sure the model supports user serviceability.

At this performance level, I wouldn’t focus on memory speed; instead, I’d prioritize storage capacity since 8+4 equals 12GB, which is significantly more practical in 2024 compared to just 8GB.

It’s unlikely potatoe chip will upload files larger than 8GB; the CPU likely handles that task instead.

Using a 2x4 provides dual rank performance, even without dual channel. It's a minor upgrade unless you verify the 8GB drive you're purchasing is a dual-rank model.

It looks like IFIXIT might have a resource for this.

Hello everyone, thanks for your thoughts. I already own a Samsung EVO 860 SSD in my work laptop. It’s just a standard machine with Office, iTunes, and VLC. Appreciate the feedback—I think if it’s not a big deal I’ll keep the 2x4GB version. If later I find a better option like an 8GB SSD, I might upgrade to 16GB, but I doubt it’s necessary for this setup. I have a desktop for other tasks. Thanks! PD

Remove one of the 4GB drives and swap it for the 8GB model. I’d choose the 12GB option, even though it runs a bit slower, unless the smaller drives offer superior performance. (In 2024, 8GB isn’t sufficient.)
