Hello, I'm trying to decide whether to go for a managed or unmanaged setup for my small server. I need to know if it's best to use a DHCP server on a Windows 2019 machine connected to an unmanaged switch. Let me clarify my thoughts.

Ensure you're not splitting customers into separate VLANs, as this creates a simple network. A DHCP server works well in that scenario.

You're right, connecting directly to a client via a switch typically requires a smart-managed device.

It seems like you're asking about the relationship between clients A and B. Could you clarify what you mean by "talk to"? Are you referring to a specific process, interaction, or role they play in each other's work?

Two devices may link together through a switch under typical conditions. This means each connection point can communicate with every other point.

Instead of routing traffic through the switch to the server and back again, the client should pass through the switch first before reaching the desired client.

Absolutely achievable with a standard unmanaged switch

Yup, that's how the operate. The only time it will go to the server or to a router is if you have multiple subnets at play on different VLANs where they have to talk through the router to get to each other. (assuming no L3 switch is involved of course)

Set up an 8-port unmanaged gigabit switch and link it to your Windows Server 2019 datacenter. Install and configure a DHCP server so it functions as the DHCP provider, internet gateway, and NAS. Ensure it supports client-to-client communication.
