Hi everyone. My Asus Transformer T100TAF was a nice gift a while back. It’s running really slow thanks to the Atom chip and just 1GB of RAM, even when a single Chrome tab is open (using default Windows 8/8.1). Do you think there’s another operating system that would make it much faster? I mainly need it for light web browsing.
Choose a minimal desktop setup such as Xfce or LXDE instead of focusing on distribution details.
You might consider alternatives like Lubuntu or Puppy Linux, though they’ll likely face performance issues (especially without extra RAM). Browsers such as Chrome or Firefox don’t automatically become lighter on Linux—they depend on the setup. Bay Trail netbooks performed poorly when first released, over ten years ago. https://lubuntu.me/ https://puppylinux-woof-ce.github.io There’s a lot of belief in using Linux to revitalize old hardware, but it’s still an older machine. If you aim for modern applications, you’ll need to adjust your expectations accordingly.
It's the T100TAF, a 64-bit version that requires a 32-bit installer—this adds some complexity since it's not as smooth to set up. The T200 is much easier; I've got one running on Linux Mint Cinnamon. Just a note, the process might be more challenging than expected.
