I was planning to replace my CPU and motherboard with a 5600 or 5600X from an R5 1600, passing the old setup to a friend for his build. Are there any good options worth considering? Should I opt for the 5600X because it’s about $20 more, or should I hold off and invest in a GPU upgrade from a 1070Ti instead?
The 5600X and 5600 operate closely together in price, so choose the cheaper one unless your board lacks BIOS flashback. If your board doesn’t support it, consider the 5600X; otherwise, opt for the 5600X (which might cost an extra $5-10 for BIOS Flashback). Unless you’re targeting a very budget model, a 12400(F) and B660 board would be more practical. Costs will be similar, performance nearly identical, but the 12400 offers better upgrade potential since it’s not on a dead socket. For an in-place upgrade, the 5600 makes sense; if you’re replacing the whole system, go with Intel. Saving for a new GPU is reasonable, but beyond a 1070 Ti, you’ll likely hit CPU limits at higher resolutions. I’d prioritize a CPU upgrade first, then explore a better GPU option.
