Checking motherboard upgrade options
Begin here with no prior knowledge about motherboards. I’m okay with simple explanations. I’m just getting into trading and streaming, and I intend to upgrade soon. Right now I have an Intel i5-7400 at 3.00Ghz with four CPUs, a GTX 1060, and 6GB of DDR4 RAM from AsusTek PRIME B250M-A. I’m thinking about switching to an I9 series CPU and upgrading my GPU to either a 2070 Super or a 2080/2080 Pro. I need triple monitor support via HDMI for managing graphs and spreadsheets, and I’m considering AORUS monitors. The main concern is my power supply—it’s 500W now. Should I upgrade the motherboard, and what are the downsides of adding an I9 9900K or 9900KS to my current board? Also, if I decide to change the motherboard, should I completely rebuild the whole rig? Any recommendations for motherboards over $300 CAD would be helpful.
I suggest AMD because it offers strong performance without the need for complex cooling solutions. The recent models I used are still very capable, and they don’t require the extensive water cooling setups that come with Intel’s offerings.
Check a few reviews for details. This model is similar to the AMD CPU you mentioned, offering great performance—especially on a single core—but can get quite hot. Both have the same number of cores, and the 9900k/ks uses twice as much power as the 3700x/3800x version when running at full speed.
