Checking if you can boost an I5 6600k using the MSI B250 M3 is possible.
I recently upgraded my PC to an I5 6600k with a new motherboard, specifically the MSI B250 M3. After installing the operating system and drivers, I wanted to adjust the BIOS settings to see if I could overclock my newly purchased CPU. However, when trying to set the CPU ratio in the overclock section, I was aiming for 46 GHz but only reached 39 GHz using the + key on the number pad. My question is whether it's feasible to overclock the I5 6600k with the MSI B250 M3 motherboard.
You won't be able to push the clock beyond what's available on a b250 board. To access the full range of multipliers, you need a z series board such as a z270. The limit at 3.9 (x39 multiplier) is due to that being the maximum turbo speed for the CPU when it's in stock. Going beyond that is considered overclocking and isn't supported.
