Have been overclocked to 4.9Ghz at 1.27v it appears stable enough to play all day (Destiny 2, Fortnite, Borderlands 3, plus streaming on a second screen). Average gaming temperatures are around 55°C, which seems acceptable. However, I was advised that for the overclock to remain stable, running Prime95 for 2–4 hours and then checking temperatures after 10–15 minutes is necessary. Temperatures reaching 90°C quickly during this process seems unusual—should it be considered normal? I’m aware Prime95 can stress the CPU, but such a rapid spike is concerning.
Cheers for any feedback!
We share a very similar configuration with my 8700K at 4.9GHz and 1.278v... Regarding stability, I wouldn’t be concerned about the 2 to 4 hour period since all the games and programs you’re running are functioning properly. I ran Prime95 for nearly three hours on version 26.6 and an Aida64 run to verify stability, but a 30-minute test should suffice to detect any issues... I should have noted that temperatures can climb up to 90 degrees during the Prime95 small FFT tests, depending on the CPU cooler you use; with a good cooler, it should be manageable. Eventually, I tried running Delid on my 8700K and even with small FFTs, temperatures never exceeded 70 degrees. Based on your setup, your results look solid for extended gaming sessions... enjoy!
Sure thing, but I hope the 360 cooler works well and it brings back the 80s vibe. I generally prefer avoiding the 90s for too long.
It wasn't great when it reached 90, maybe we should consider swapping the paste.
Just to make things clear. 100 Degreec C is TJ Max and at that level the 8700K will slow down. As I mentioned, I wouldn't be too concerned unless you're aiming for record overclocking... As long as it's running smoothly and at a stable temperature, you should be okay.
