Hello! I'm looking for a new NAS setup with a board, CPU, and memory. I also use this system occasionally for my 'hackspace' computer. My current needs would include: * Kingston 8GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM ECC DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Server Memory Model KSM26ES8/8ME * GIGABYTE C246-WU4 LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel C246 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Motherboard * Intel Core i3-8100 Coffee Lake Quad-Core 3.6 GHz LGA 1151 (300 Series) 65W BX80684I38100 Desktop Processor Intel UHD Graphics 630 or i3-9100 My priority is ECC RAM since I run ZFS, and I need to connect two HBA cards (PCIe 2.0 x8) totaling 15 drives, plus a 10GbE NIC (PCIe 2.0 x4). I want decent graphics for web browsing, YouTube, PDFs, Kicad, etc., and I’m okay skipping one HBA if the board has enough SATA ports. The CPUs have fast enough performance for my use case. The issue is that on newegg.ca none of the listed ECC memory fits the Gigabyte board, so I had to choose another. Everywhere it says "Xeon ECC support" but nothing about i3 ECC support, which makes me question if it actually enables ECC. Of course, the simplest fix would be to buy a different Xeon model... Can anyone confirm whether my selection works and provide a link to verify? (Because some say it does, others claim it doesn't.)

AMD is the only one with Consumer Chips that kind of support ECC, depends on the motherboard, and having unbuffered dimms or whatever. plenty of info is out there anyways. Unless you're going the used Xeon with ECC DDR3 route anyways.

It ain't gonna happen with Intel's consumer lineup.

ECC is available for Intel Core i3 processors. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html It seems Core i3 has consistently offered ECC support, and in recent CPU generations it has remained a viable option for those needing reliability without the high cost of premium chips.

Intel's 8100 series is compatible with ECC support, and the C246 also backs the i3 8100i. The recommended RAM info comes from the Asus QVL page for the listed motherboard, so it should function properly.

I believed there was nothing left when they ceased backing xeon in consumer chipset boards.

I understand the context now—it's about a Gigabyte motherboard, not an Asus one. The RAM isn't on the Gigabyte QVL, but this model appears in the QVL and is available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.ca/Kingston-ValueRAM-...B01AW2L9ZU For comparison, the Gigabyte QVL can be found here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Server-Motherbo...upport-doc

What a different phrasing! The original reads more naturally, while the alternative sounds more technical and less fluid.
