I just installed a new PC but my BIOS isn’t up to date. Changing it feels risky, especially updating. On my previous system, I only updated once and it caused major issues, so I reverted back. That experience left me nervous. My current board is a Gigabyte X870 GAMING X WIFI 7. It’s clear there’s a big difference from the ASUS Maximus VI Formula (Z87) I had before. Updating might be safer now since newer versions are more stable. But if I could skip the update and still get by without too much trouble, I’d consider it. My current BIOS is F2 (released 16 Aug 2024), while the latest from Gigabyte is F4 (13 Mar 2025). What do you think? Should I hold off or proceed with the update? I checked the support notes, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. Here’s the link to the BIOS version list: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X87...rt-dl-bios

It’s not necessary to refresh it unless there are issues or you replace CPUs.

Updating the BIOS on most boards will erase your configurations, often requiring you to reinstall the BIOS before the system starts up again. The process has improved somewhat, but you may still need to restore certain settings to get the PC to boot. BIOS updates address stability and security concerns, and a security patch is included in the latest release for your board. The advantages are questionable, though. For those whose PC is functioning properly, it might be better to leave it as is.

I considered a few options before deciding. At first, I kept my BIOS settings simple since I wasn’t certain which ones might cause issues with older versions. However, after reviewing the update notes on Gigabyte’s site, I realized there were no specific warnings about those settings.

They keep refining am5, making it simple and safe without causing harm. Once finished, double-check the XMP/RAM settings. If needed, reapply PBO/CO; this should reset issues, though it’s unlikely to happen.

Your motherboard supports QFLASH PLUS, making recovery simple. I regularly save updates for my system.

It doesn't work as expected. Sometimes it's due to RAM compatibility problems. For instance, I often keep slower RAM around because the NUCs I used for firewalls wouldn't start properly until the BIOS was updated. They might even alter CPU voltage settings to improve stability. I've noticed BIOS updates sometimes adjust fan curves for better cooling and quieter operation. Regarding changes you should make, those depend on your specific configuration. Occasionally security patches are released, which can be quite significant. But most issues require the attacker to have direct access to the device, so weigh whether an update is necessary for you.

The guide should explain how to operate the QFLASH device.

It's alright, but I'd still update the BIOS if your PC is high-end, and definitely you can take advantage of qflash. You can find BIOS update guide or someone could even give you summary how to do it step by step if you ask.

It seems AM5 is still emerging, so updating might be ideal. The BIOS gives me some concerns, but after hearing others' experiences, I plan to tackle the update this weekend.
