It’s not crucial since 4GHz isn’t overly demanding, so consider letting the VRM operate more smoothly.

I don’t remember the settings you chose before using that board, likely it was left on. Your main worry is the chip requiring 1.4V at 4GHz—you tried 1.38V for 4.46GHz with an X5675 on the R3F, which gave a fairly typical result. Are you running an i7-920 or just experiencing inconsistent performance?

Weak output performance, probably running a 45nm Nehalem chip. Thought the voltage requirements would be manageable with my 45nm E8400 at 1.4v, but it’s actually worse than expected. You don’t need extra VRM power unless you push past 1.6v or switch to a budget 6-core Westmere and crank it up. Changing the VRM setting might not help much, though. With my P6T Deluxe (PX58D Premium BIOS), I just set it to full power and ignored it. The stock BIOS doesn’t support that option. I’d recommend updating to Riot Games’ Rage III Black Edition BIOS for the best performance. It could offer higher voltage options, more tweaks, and better overclocking potential. The 32nm chip runs at 1.55v, while the 45nm version can go up to 1.6v. VRM voltage only becomes an issue around 2v+, so unless you plan that jump, it probably won’t hurt much.

The R3F works well without needing BIOS flashing. X-Power delivers maximum performance from the VRMs. It wouldn’t be wise to push beyond 1.45v for daily use—higher isn’t necessary with a solid chip, but you can go even higher for benchmarks.

I devoted just three seconds on Google + CMD+F to a piece of content about the board, discovering that X-Power is the complete setting, while T-Balance remains the standard: [link]. After a few more minutes searching on Google, I realized X-Power isn’t necessary unless you’re working with LN2 components. If you’re concerned about power use or VRM temperatures, revert to the balanced setup. I’ve never experienced temperature problems and prefer keeping all options available, so I usually save this advice until it affects air performance. Here’s a summary of the board by ASUS: [link]. I'm dealing with a 4 heatpipe 92mm Chinese tower running at low 4GHz across all cores. It's not performing well, so I'm planning to upgrade it into a hybrid air-water cooling setup connected to a budget loop and a car AC evaporator. Soon I should be able to keep the X5660 cool enough for around 4.5g OC on all six cores, maybe even pushing up to 1.6v—though not every day due to power use (not wanting to blow my parents' power bill). I think I'll just replace the board when I get more RAM, since the current 4100 uncore at 1.55v is really bad. I'd like it around 4.3-4.5g for decent performance.
