The fix came from updating the BIOS on the motherboard. It seems there was a software problem with the chipset. Actions included resetting CMOS, unplugging all drives except the boot drive, and booting into Windows. I downloaded the latest AMD firmware and installed the newest BIOS—this process took about four hours for me, with the progress bar barely moving. The system should now work. I plan to reinstall Windows to check if that helps. I’ll also upgrade to a GTX 1080 I just received and see if it improves things. Next month I’ll get a Corsair iQ 220t and a new power supply; I’m unsure which to choose since the 650W should suffice, but I might go higher to 750W. Later this year I’ll switch my boot drive to an NVMe SSD and replace my existing drives with IronWolf units from Seagate—possibly up to 4TB each.
