I own an i5 8600k and a gigabyte z370m d3h motherboard. The problem lies with the board itself, especially with XMP support. I've tried two different motherboards—Trident Z 3600mhz 16gb (8*2) and Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz (16*2). Despite testing, it consistently fails to reach the advertised speed. At 3000mhz it works, but above that it stops. Generally, XMP activation should function like restarting BIOS, yet my board behaves oddly, refusing to cooperate. If it somehow works by chance, it runs well for weeks. I had to open the RAM whenever I needed to reset BIOS or fix RAM issues. Whenever I activate XMP, it causes boot failures, restarts, and BIOS resets. If luck played a role, it keeps working for days or months—but that’s just chance. Activating XMP is really frustrating. What I’m wondering is... am I getting unlucky with the RAM kits I bought, or is my entry-level Z370 motherboard simply not powerful enough to handle XMP?
Have you made sure your BIOS is updated to the latest release? Also, XPM isn't a certainty—it could be due to your CPU's IMC not supporting the fastest RAM speeds. It's improbable but not impossible. Verify whether you possess the most recent BIOS version.
It seems the issue might not be the motherboard but possibly the CPU. It could be worth adjusting some voltages manually, though it will be challenging. You might start with VCCIO and VCCSA set to 1.13 and observe the results. If that doesn’t work, try 1.15. If still no improvement, consider setting them to 1.10. If none of these steps help, stick with 1.13 and increase the RAM voltage slightly. XPM might be defaulting to 1.35, but you could experiment with 1.38 to see if it makes a difference. Generally, voltages around 1.40 or lower are fine, but lower is better for RAM settings.
