I bought the MSI Mag B550 and Ryzen 7 5800x, but the box says it's a 5000 series desktop. I’m unsure if I should update my BIOS or risk damaging the system.
It depends on when the board was manufactured and which BIOS version it shipped with. Many boards say 5000-ready but are not out of the box, requiring a BIOS update. No way to know without attempting a boot. If the BIOS needs an update to recognize the 5800X, it more than likely won't boot past BIOS, and from BIOS you can update accordingly. It's a a pretty straightforward process. Most simply require downloading the BIOS update to a USB flash drive (some won't read properly for the actual installation), and flash the revision either through BIOS, or some actually allow flashing without the CPU installed. Consult your manual for your board's particular procedure... Quite a few tech reviewers have videos outlining this process for different boards as well.
Usually a 5000 setup indicates the device will boot with a Ryzen 3 processor and you won’t require an older chip to get it running. This doesn’t guarantee optimal performance. The 5800X was an early Ryzen 3 model, so it might function adequately, but the BIOS has likely been updated since then, improving its performance if you upgrade.
Agree, but with a warning. If done correctly, there is not going to be any problems. But the risk of something going wrong could cause major problems. It's like waving a gun around, it's not likely to just go off, but if it does it could kill someone. You should only update your bios if something is truly not working.
I think it's fine to attempt a boot without the update if needed, though certain conditions might call for removing the processor to apply the update (depending on board support and BIOS port availability). Results can differ between models, so checking your manual is wise.
