I switched from an AMD AM3 setup I’d owned for a decade. I installed a Ryzen 5 3rd gen and an X570 motherboard. The machine had been acting up since I first assembled it on Amazon. Recently, while playing Doom, I fell asleep and woke up to the computer frantically spinning when it tried to boot. It seemed to be trying to restart but failed. After turning it off and back on, the board’s LED shifted from orange to red and stopped working entirely. The CPU fan was running, GPU fans were active, and the MSI logo appeared, yet the power connectors near the card didn’t light up. I replaced the RAM, GPU, and PSU with parts from an older Intel system I had spare, and everything functioned fine. That’s the setup I’m using now for work—no gaming focus. It’s not ideal for performance, mainly because of the age of the Intel CPU and board. Given that most components looked normal, I suspect the issue lies with the X570 or the Ryzen 5 itself. Since I purchased them from Amazon, I might be able to return them, but I’m unsure which model to send. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My computer needs to stay available for work, not just for gaming, and I have a child to care for. Waking up from sleep unexpectedly might occur occasionally, often triggered by a minor mouse movement. However, the problems you mentioned haven’t appeared. Have you checked if you reinserted the memory and GPU? Did any of the components show signs of reaction? I’d think the mainboard is likely the first point to investigate, as it starts the boot process.
It seems Windows Update caused issues, especially after a long night of updates. The board works fine once it boots up, suggesting the problem might be with the update process or BIOS. It could be related to a Windows 8 update failure or a BIOS error during installation.
It isn't Windows. I've faced issues before. The most recent test used a Sabrient NVMe SSD. It's functioning properly on this spare PC now that I'm using it. All other components were connected except the PSU, which was the only exception from the last test—CPU and RAM.
Great, you can identify it to either the CPU or the motherboard—many people can’t reach them. I’m leaning toward the motherboard first, and I don’t mind LED displays or anything else, as long as it’s functioning well overall.
I wasn't sure about that setup. The board had one 8-pin and one 4-pin connector. Would it be okay to combine the 8-pin with two 4-pin connectors and use half of an 8-pin cable for the 4-pin side? Your PSU cables are split into two 4-pin sections, so that might work. I'm a bit worried but trying to stay positive.
It generally doesn't need to. One 8-pin suffices, the extra 4-pin isn't required.
