I’m looking for a fresh custom PC setup and just got my hands on a graphics card. For the CPU, I was considering the 5900X, but heard that newer V-cache versions are coming soon. Should I hold off for those upcoming CPUs or go ahead now? Is the performance boost enough to justify waiting 3 to 6 months—or longer?
AM-5/Zen-4 will introduce features such as DDR-5 RAM, meaning backward compatibility is unlikely except for certain PCI-E components like your new GPU. The decision mainly hinges on choosing AM-4 now or holding off for AM-5 later. Upgrading to a lower-end AM-4 CPU immediately and then switching to a Zen-3 refresh later might work, but it could be risky.
I’d hold off, since aside from performance the upgrade potential needs improvement (both AMD and Intel’s latest models will lag behind with DDR4/AM4/1200). Yet Intel’s 12th generation seems even more appealing. I’d compare benchmarks once each version is released.
That's intriguing. I thought the 3D cache was included in an updated 5900/5950X, not in a brand-new unannounced CPU. It seemed more like a demonstration of the 5950X rather than a genuine product release.
Read an article mentioning AMD's new 3D-VCache technology using Ryzen chiplets. It highlights up to 192MB of L3 cache per chip, promising a significant boost for gaming performance. Source: Reference:
I usually wait for the 5900x to hit a significant discount or for the upcoming major sale. The prices are too high to match the latest gear unless it's for a business machine.
In the PC world you're always looking forward to the latest update.
