The graphics card receives dedicated 16 PCIe lanes from the processor. The initial M.2 slot provides 4 PCIe lanes, while additional or even third M.2 slots draw lanes from the chipset. The chipset limits the available PCIe lanes—8 for x470 models, 6 for b450 boards, and more in x570 with 4.0 lanes. Intel’s offerings are similarly constrained. For RAID setups using multiple M.2 drives, Threadripper processors paired with compatible motherboards are ideal, offering 60 PCIe lanes and typically three M.2 slots each with four lanes. A 72 PCIe 4.0 slot is available for the upcoming Threadripper release. Generally, using two M.2 SSDs for RAID 0 isn’t necessary since a single SSD can already deliver up to 4GB/s with just one, especially if you opt for a controller-equipped SSD.
