Check the normal operating temperatures for the i7 8700k with an OC of 4.7ghz.
Hey everyone,
I recently upgraded to the 8700k and got a new cooler to go with it. I made sure everything was good to go and I'm curious if my temps are ok. I have a asus z370 prime-a and a deepcool captain 240x white. I know these chips run kinda hot and especially with stress tests and benchmarks. I'm just wondering if what I'm getting is somewhat normal.
All cores set to 4.7ghz.
I've left power phase to standard and cpu current is at 100%.
My voltage is set to 1.25v manual.
XMP enabled and MCE disabled.
SVID behavior set to best case scenario
Everything else is set to auto.
My temps during cinebench are in the mid 80s and peak on the first core at 91c.
During intel burn test they're in the 80's and 70's again with a peak at around 90c.
When gaming it's usually between the 40's and 60's but with some spikes in the 70s when loading a new area or starting up a game.
My idle temps are in the low to mid 30's.
If anyone can let me know if this is alright it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi waliber
Optimal ranges are 10-15°C above room temperature when idle and 60-65°C under load. Since you're overclocked, those temperatures are fine though a bit high. I'm not sure you'll ever hit them during gaming or regular use. Your TJmax is 100°C, after which the CPU will slow down to protect itself. You should be fine as long as the system stays stable.

I don't let my rig reach temperatures above 70c, let alone 80c. You have the top CPU right now, so why overclock? Overclocking doesn't really help with games; it's more about the GPU. That's just my thinking.
I don't let my rig reach temperatures near 70c, let alone 80c. You have the best CPU right now, why not overclock? Overclocking doesn't really help with games; it's more about the GPU. You see, that's just my thinking.
Why Overclock? To achieve the highest performance from your CPU.
A "K" processor is designed for overclocking, and some AAA games and MMOs are CPU-heavy, gaining from a solid stable boost.
In many situations, the GPU becomes the limiting factor, and overclocking can usually fix this issue.

Why Overclock? To achieve the MAX performance of your CPU, of course.

The improvement won't be huge, though.
