Planning a fresh rig in a month! Deciding now because we see what’s coming for components. Should I - A. Keep using AM4 and go with a budget B450 Ryzen 5 build B. Use Intel 12th gen and switch to DDR5. Or opt for an older Intel setup like 4750 or 4970K?

Awaiting updates from the 12th generation evaluation to determine the value of C. The purpose of the PC is clearly defined, and the financial constraints are being considered.

You can also utilize the 12th generation with DDR4 memory, likely offering significant cost savings if you find a compatible board.

Use case focuses on mid-range gaming with 1080p at 144hz and aiming for around 200fps. Expecting to upgrade to an RX 570 with 8GB RAM, similar to my previous setup. Questioning the value of such a GPU as a temporary solution—should I purchase it now? My friend is selling one. I previously had a 4570 in an Optiplex rig, but my 570 with 8GB was limited. Likely waiting until the 12th generation. It’s available for preorder today on Newegg.

For gaming, you can choose 5600x or hold off until the 12th generation review is out—we still don’t have its performance details.

Monitor feedback on Alder Lake after the NDA is released, then revisit for advice. Everyone is eager to assess its performance and decide if it’s worth recommending.

Sure thing! I’ll likely grab a GPU soon and then keep an eye on Alder Lake reviews. Deal!

I’ll wait for reviews and verified benchmarks before considering the 12th generation. As Linus mentioned in today’s video, the Intel performance figures might be inflated due to the Windows 11 AMD issues. Those problems have been fixed now, and it seems unlikely that 12th gen Intel actually outperformed Zen 3 by such large margins—especially since many cores are now single-threaded from the 6th generation. There’s an IPC improvement, so it might still edge out AMD on a single core, but not dramatically. In short, for now, getting value will likely mean sticking with the 11th gen or Zen 3, and you won’t sacrifice much in CPU performance. We’ll have to see how much DDR5 actually helps at this stage. Latency is worse definitely, but the extra channels and bandwidth could make a difference. Overall, it’s probably more costly than DDR4, so even if you opt for the 12th gen, DDR4 would still be a better choice right now.
