Hi, I shared a post earlier today about my computer shutting down unexpectedly. At first, I suspected a problem with the motherboard, but after testing parts, I realized the issue might be with the CPU. My machine has a Ryzen 5 2600x, and during inspection I didn’t find any visible damage like discoloration or bent pins. However, the computer wouldn’t power on while the CPU was connected. I removed the plastic cover to check the socket and noticed a damaged receiving pin. Interestingly, it started when the CPU was directly in the socket, but not when placed inside the plastic cover—though other components like the monitor, keyboard, and mouse remain unresponsive. Those AMD CPUs from that era use PGA connectors, not LGA. Each has its own pros and cons. If the socket is damaged, the motherboard can suffer too. PGA offers some benefits but also presents challenges. The only solutions I’m aware of involve desoldering the socket or swapping out the damaged pin from the back. It’s a tough job, demanding strong soldering skills and possibly specialized tools. You might try using a fine needle to gently bend the connector, though that seems unlikely to succeed. A major concern is metal fatigue from bending, which could cause the pin to break. Testing the CPU on another board could be useful. The risk of failure might be low enough to be worth trying. One chip seems intact, possibly the processor itself rather than the socket. PGA connects by inserting pins into holes and pressing them against the blades for a connection. If repairs are needed, you’d likely list it on eBay with photos, hoping someone with the right expertise buys it at a steep discount and refurbishes it. Alternatively, you could hire someone to fix it. It might not be worth the effort. The next best alternatives would be a 12400F or a B series motherboard, which would be faster and more affordable overall. If the chip is functional, a new board might be cheaper; if not, it’s likely worth replacing.
