My computer behaves oddly and occasionally stops unexpectedly while in use. It displays a CPU red light without any response, though fans spin and the keyboard/mouse remain off. I've tried basic troubleshooting steps—reconnecting everything, unplugging the power supply cables, and reconnecting again. The issue also occurs when trying to connect an external hard drive, which causes the same shutdown and red light problem. Even after adding one RAM stick, the problem persists. Turning the PSU on and off seems to resolve it. Windows 10 64-bit CPU: Intel i5-9600K RAM: HyperX Fury 8x2 2400MHz Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 GPU: Zotac gaming RTX 3070TI AMP Halo 8GB Motherboard: Z390 GAMING X (Version F10) PSU: Cooler Master MWE 650W Gold Full Modular Storage: Samsung 980 SSD 1TB M.2 NVMe Case: MasterBox MS600 I’ve removed one RAM stick and everything works fine now, so it might be related to that component.

Checked RAM by plugging in one and starting up, then tried the other to see how it performed. Both functioned properly without any CPU warning, but using both together caused the CPU to flash red.

We utilized alternating slots or consecutive ones.

I attempted to use both RAM modules in separate slots, it functioned temporarily before failing again. I moved one module to a different slot and tried another arrangement. The process involved changing the order from left to right, then adjusting between slots 2 to 4, 1 to 3. I wasn’t certain about the exact pattern you were referring to—whether alternating or consecutive.

Sure, try placing them in slots 1+3 or 2+4. That's the correct method for using dual channel memory. Using them in 1+2 or 3+4 is problematic. It might seem unusual at first, but it can be resolved by simply restarting the device.

Earlier I used 2+4 then changed to 1+3 due to crashes, but it still failed with 1+3 too. Now I’m using just one RAM stick occasionally, though it keeps crashing even after power cycles—sometimes I have to reinsert or swap the RAM slots. It only stops when I connect an external hard drive. No issues with a single RAM slot so far.

The system functioned normally briefly before stopping unexpectedly. After reinserting the RAM in various slots a few times, it started working again. This might indicate a temporary hardware issue or a problem with the power connection.

Visited the computer store to discover the issue was with the power supply unit.
