I want to be honest—I used to handle this well when I was younger, but now I’m really new to it after losing a lot of knowledge. My setup is an HP EliteBook 840 G1 with an 8GB RAM i5-4310u at 2GHz. I’m trying to figure out the best CPU for my PC.
I checked the HP support page, but it didn’t seem very useful. I was thinking about upgrading the RAM to 16GB based on that link. Is that a good idea? Thanks for your help!
AMD is correct about this. Not every laptop has the same specs. Sticking with 8GB RAM seems reasonable for you.
In short: you can't upgrade the CPU. In a bit longer: this is a BGA CPU, meaning it is soldered onto the motherboard. It is highly impractical and next to impossible for most to upgrade this, as the cost of doing this procedure far outweighs the cost of just buying a new laptop. Yep, Just gotta get some DDR3L (that's not normal DDR3, this is DDR3L which runs at 1.35V instead of the normal 1.5V) 8GB 1600Mhz SODIMM sticks. I would check if you have 2x4GB or 1x8GB now. Are you sure you need 16GB of RAM though? I assume you mean the soldered CPU? Yes, that is the case with most laptops. It's very rare to find a laptop that does it in another way, but they do exist (like older laptops and very high end devices like that Alienware with a desktop 9900K in it).
There are various laptops where you can boost the RAM, some support upgrading the hard drive, and most lack options for CPU or GPU changes. A fast search confirms this trend. Generally, with Intel, if it mentions "U" it’s likely permanently installed.
