I currently possess a fully functional setup, but I secured a solid offer on a 5950X. I'm uncertain if the VRM on my Asrock board can handle the demands of 16 cores and 32 threads over time (ASRock X570M Pro4 is the platform). Specifics: 5950X 6800XT 32GB DDR4 3600 MP600 non-Pro NVMe SSD, Fractal Design Meshify C Mini case, 860W PSU. Are there any Micro ATX options you could recommend that offer superior VRM performance while still supporting Gen4 for the drive? I’m leaning toward staying with the X570, but I suspect I’ll postpone plans for a second NVMe drive. My Unicorn board would provide solid VRM and also give me two dedicated Gen4 PCIe slots without bandwidth sharing. Upgrading to a different case could work if it includes full Gen4 PCIe lanes and the necessary speed. I’m okay with a case that supports X16/X4/X4 PCIe at full rate, and I don’t mind missing any X1 slots. Edit: also, the PSU is crucial for the whole system. o.x

I'd check the VRM temperatures on the existing board first. It's not exceptional, but it should probably be okay.

If you're open to a bigger build, I suggest the ASUS X570-E Gaming instead of the -F since it offers more VRM.

I'm not sure if the board records VRM temperatures; you can use a thermometer or a stick-on sensor. From what I've learned before, the VRM heatsink tends to get quite warm—like burning your finger, but that's just a sign it's hot.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a VRM temp sensor, if the board doesn't have one, yeah replace the board. There are a number of different B550M boards with good VRMs on them, the Aorus B550M Pro-P, the ASRock B550M Steel Legend, TUF B550M-Plus, etc. I'd avoid the X570 boards though, they're not really better than their B550 counter parts feature wise, and they are a lot more expensive.

I own a Strix B550-XE paired with a 5900X and 4x8GB RAM. It’s a reliable build with the VRM you’re after. You’ll also find an Asus Hyper M.2 slot, supporting up to four 2280 M.2 drives, with two slots available on the board. SLi is included but likely not necessary. I got it during a sale, which was a good deal.

You’ll also find an Asus Hyper M.2 slot, supporting up to four 2280 M.2 drives, with two slots available on the board. SLi is included but likely not necessary. I got it during a sale, which was a good deal.

Hi @ Sarra No such motherboard exists that supports two M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. I believe you shouldn't overclock this chipset on the AsRock board. It should work fine. In the attachment I shared screenshots of the tested hardware, unboxed and similar to the AsRock X570 Pro 4 with Ryzen 9 3900X. Edited June 27, 2022 by Crucial1706

Hi @ Sarra No such motherboard exists that supports two M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. I believe you shouldn't overclock this chipset on the AsRock board. It should work fine. I encountered some users experiencing issues with this board due to lower-end voltage settings, which caused crashes even though the boost clock was high. A newer model resolved that problem. In theory it should manage it, but it could just overheat. You might test a fan directed at the VRMs to check for better stability. If that works, you’ve found your solution.

Are you really relying on the extra ATX expansion features? If not, the B550 boards listed above work well with strong VRM setups. However, if your Pro4 already has a VRM temperature sensor, I’d start there. That board’s VRM is weaker, but its heatsink is decent enough—so I’d run thermal tests on what you plan to do. For a thorough check, try Prime95 with PBO (the most demanding workload) using the VRM under load.
