Hey everyone, thinking about setting up a dedicated HTPC—maybe even a home lab. I found a good deal on an HP Prodesk 600 G3 and am considering swapping it in for a Xeon E3-1230 v5 ($20). I’m curious if anyone has experience using that processor with the official docs, since support isn’t listed.

It’s highly unlikely this will function properly because the BIOS won’t recognize the chip or the chipset. Even though both use LGA 1511, not all LGA 1511 chips are compatible. Explain your worries about core count on a mini HTPC and what you’re trying to achieve.

Chipset performance should be okay for these mainstream Xeons, according to general knowledge. However, some cases might require BIOS adjustments from manufacturers like HP, Dell, or Lenovo. You may need to search online to find others who have used this setup successfully. From what I found, no one seems to confirm the CPU would fail, though a Reddit discussion only mentioned ECC concerns without actual success reports.

I wondered whether getting 4C/8T at a lower price would make sense if you decide to go the homelab path.
